I truly believe that it is simply the most amazing and unique style of dancing I have ever been a part of. It all started at a belly dance show where I was captivated by all the costumes, moves, and the intense beauty on stage that my love began. I decided to take classes to learn all the moves and techniques. Although, I gained so much more then just techniques from the class. I learned so much about the history of belly dance and I was introduced to a whole new world. This style of dance brought so much peace and joy into my life, because it makes me feel better physically and mentally.
Belly dance is one of the best style of dances because it is great exercise, contains unique costumes, and it helps you feel and express music in your own way. Belly dancing is a style of dancing in which the entire body is used to show the music that is being played. The dancer must use her body to accent the beats of the song, therefore she is working out everything from head to toe. In belly dance there is great focus on the belly, causing this type of dancing to be one of the best forms of exercise for the abdominal region.
After a few months of belly dancing I was able to notice significant changes in my abdominals, which was a great plus to the fun I was having while dancing. Belly dance helps burn a large number of calories while being a low impact type of work out. There is also a great deal of leg movement in belly dance, which is great exercise for your legs. In fact, I had an instructor who stated that our routines and exercises would strengthen our legs so much that it would reduce any leg or knee pain anyone may suffer from due to previous injuries.
There are plenty of different moves involved in this style of dancing that can enhance our entire body. Essentially, belly dancing can help you have a very strong body by simply having fun. Belly dance costumes are extremely fun. They are full of color, beads, coins, and many other amusing ornaments. Most costumes consist of two pieces, a top and a skirt, usually so the dancers are able to show everything that is going on with their abdominals. For each performance I have participated in I have made my own costume. I think it is important that your costume shows your personality and no one can put together something that shows that better than yourself.
The creation of your costumes is the part of the belly dance that you create to introduce yourself to the crowd. There is great importance in costumes because they bring life into the dance. For a fast, happy song a dancer will wear bright colors with bright beads. For slower, sad songs darker or dull colors will be used. It is up to you to decide what each song means to you and what colors and designs fit best with the music to portray the emotions you are trying to display. The costumes do not only highlight the music, but they also highlight the beauty of a womans body and the grace that she displays.
The music this style is mainly danced to is for the most part instrumental. The most common instrument you will dance to as a belly dancer will be the drums. To be able to dance to such an instrument is not very easy, but it is a great deal of fun. I believe that dancing is expressing what you feel is right, therefore when a song has a fast drum beat I try to slow it down with slower moves. I always try to make every song my own, and interpret it how I understand and feel it. Belly dance gives you this liberty to do this, because there are very few words in the music.
Therefore, you are free to tell your own story and express it through your body. A belly dancer usually feels the music and portrays the emotions she feels from each song. In my belly dance class we usually find a song and listen to it while laying on the floor with the lights very dim. As I lay there I let my imagination flow freely. I usually feel an emotion right away and from that feeling I begin picturing myself wherever the music takes me. Then, we start it over, and this time we begin to add moves to the emotions we felt while the song was plying.
With this exercise I am able to really connect to the music and make it my own. I also feel that doing this is extremely relaxing, because it helps me calm my mind while dancing. I am able to let my mind flow freely along with my body. The circular and flowing movements in belly dancing are likened to a state of dance-meditation, which is extremely helpful at times, especially for a college student. Usually, a session of slow, graceful dancing will clear the mind and induce a state of mental relaxation for anyone who may be under stress.
Belly dance is a style that sets your mind and body free and lets you express yourself like no other dance. You make each song your own and express it in your own way. In other types of dances such as salsa or hip hop the music has lyrics, which tell a story. Therefore, the dancers will have to portray the story according to the lyrics. You dont have as much room to make it your own. Your moves may also be limited in salsa because you will usually be partnered, where the male leads, which takes a great deal of your freedom.
The moves used in salsa or other types of dancing such as ballet, contemporary, or hip hop tend to be very stiff. Meanwhile, belly dancing consists of very flowing and relaxed moves. I dont think any other style of dancing is as free as belly dancing. Belly dancing is a true beauty, that will only enhance your life. It is the best style of dance you can be a part of because of the strengthening work outs, individual costumes, and the freedom you have to make it your own.
It is a true form of art that lets anyone express themselves with supreme liberty. It is a form in which you portray the beautiful sounds of music with the beauty of the human body, by simply having fun and being relaxed. The human body is an art form itself and many belly dancers simply accent the beauty with the costumes, moves, and the beats of the music. Belly dance is truly a beautiful style of dance that is significant for the body and soul, and I believe anyone can open the window to a new life by beginning to take belly dance classes.
